Jack Russels rule.
Hi Readers ,
Today I want to write about my favourite breed of dog, the jack russel.
I owned jack russels for 25 years. First Chloe for 9 years then Meg for 16 years.
I am now jack russel-less but I keep seeing the little dogs wherever I go and I look at websites where they are advertised for sale and rescue sites where they are waiting for a new home. Fact - the popularity of the jack russel has increased since Boris Johnson and his partner Carrie adopted a rescue dog from Wales.
Will I bring another little dog into my life? I will have to hurry up because I am in the last year of my sixties.
Meantime I have lots of memories of owning jack russels. They bring excitement and mischief, sometimes mayhem , but above all lots of love and loyalty. They sense the mood of their owner and are always on hand to join in the celebrations or give comfort and support when things are bad.
Here are some of the things Meg got up to during her long life.
- She escaped many times from our garden and I would spend hours searching the neighbourhood. Fortunately there was often a telephone call from a neighbour to say they had found her.
- She ran off in the woods and was found by railway staff walking on the railway line. Somehow she had avoided the electrified track. She was rescued against regulations by one of the station staff.
- In another North Hampshire forest she ran off and we failed to find her anywhere. A few hours later an Australian in a campervan came to our front door and said," Good day, I believe this is your dog." Meg had crossed the busy A30 and was wandering happily many miles away from our home.
- She escaped, again, and found the neighbour's gerbil in a run in the garden. Perceiving it to be a rat she followed her terrier instincts and killed it. She then waited at the back door until the neighbours came home. I think she thought she had done them a favour
There are lots of ads on Freeads and Pets for Homes amongst other websites.
Your local vet may know of puppies for sale.
Think carefully because they do require commitment but they bring their own rewards.
If you go to www.dogstrust.org you will find that there are many jack russels looking for homes. Today at the time of writing there are 44 around the dog trust's centres in the U.K Happily about half of these are reserved so there are plenty of takers for these lively little dogs.
Jack Russels rule and I thank them for the happiness they have given me
